Night and Day dragons appear at a very specific time of year, no matter what planet a person might find themselves on. The first appears shortly before Winter Solstice, while the second appears shortly after. Things get tricky when more than one sun is involved, but the concept is roughly the same. They appear in the coldest time of year and then shortly before Spring in those odd situations. Night and Day dragons are rumored to have power similar to the great Ancestors of all creatures. Rather than being original or basal forms, they are a mutation that further advances the magical capabilities of elemental dragons.
Purebred dragons with completely mythical-tier traits only occur once per year. These legendary dragons are influencers which can affect the dragons around them. When a night dragon hatches, it causes nearby hatchlings to spring from their egg early, before a bond with a Rider has fully formed. This influence fades with time, so affected dragons must find appropriate Riders as soon as possible, even if they are out of their typical elemental preference. On the other hand, the Day dragon influences the elements themselves of any hatchlings it encounters in its youth. It is unable to control its ability to absorb or emanate magical energy, which leads to what is referred to as ‘mixed-breed’ Night and Day dragons occurring. The effects of both dragons dissipate as they mature, but the duration of these effects is said to be the origin of their festivals.
PHYSIOLOGY
Purebred Night and Day dragons have Mythical Physical Traits. These traits can emulate any of the known physical traits seen in other dragons. Furthermore, they can take on additional effects. Below are the known extent of Mythic Traits:
- Mythical Snout – May have any kind of face.
- Mythical Crest – May have any kind of crest, including a double crest or even triple crest.
- Mythical Body – May emulate any known body. It may have no limbs, many limbs, or even an odd number of limbs.
- Mythical Wings – May be any sort of wing or a mix of wing types. This includes unknown wing types. The number of wings is unlimited, and they may originate from anywhere on the body.
- Mythical Scales – May show any scales, along with a mix of different scale types.
- Mythical Limbs – May have any sort of foot structure, leg structure, or mix of them.
- Mythical Tail – May have a tail of any known dragon element; In addition, it may split, become a nub, switch to different types of tail, or even become tailless.
The rate of passing on mythical traits and their birth element is a mere 1% . When a Physical trait is not passed, a random trait from any element is selected. When the element does not pass, a random element from a certain pool passes instead.
Night Elemental Derivations: Ocean, Storm, Wind, Dark, Metal
Day Elemental Derivations: Light, Fire, Jungle, Thunder, Earth
GAME NOTE: The physical traits of a purebred Night and Day dragon cannot be exchanged for ‘default’ or ‘natural’ traits. This means a purebred Night dragon that was born as a wingless wyvern will remain a wingless wyvern. Crossbreeds may still swap traits as usual. Day and Night dragons are compatible with their corresponding elements, but are considered opposing during breeding matches with elements they are unaffiliated with. Marking inheritance works a little differently, as you can read in the last section.
TEMPERAMENT
Night and Day dragons do not appear to look for specific temperaments in their Riders. It is noted that their own temperaments are a mixture of their affiliated elements–with Day dragons being slightly extroverted and Night dragons being slightly introverted. This varies from dragon to dragon, especially since Day dragons might inherit a bit more haughtiness from their Light affinity and Night dragons a tad more flamboyance from their Wind affinity. They may bond with any element of Rider. Further preferences are difficult to obtain due to their extreme rarity.
DAY AND NIGHT MAGIC
The incredible physical versatility also reflects in the magic they can learn. They are capable of learning Tier Two magic in all of their corresponding elements.
Night Magical Affinities: Ocean, Storm, Wind, Dark, Metal
Day Magical Affinities: Light, Fire, Jungle, Thunder, Earth
Along with these learned magics, the Day and Night dragons are rumored to possess innate abilities. The Night Dragon can look into the past for up to a year, while the day dragon can look into the future. The extent of this ability–or if it even exists–is only known by their Riders. When a conversational dragon is asked about it, they will quickly dodge the question. Whether the magic comes at a price, or is forbidden, or is much more meager than believed, is something the general populace can only speculate on.
COLOR RULES
Day dragons–even crossbred dragons–are invariably white. Their markings may only take on pastel, off-white hues. Night dragons are the opposite, with their base scales only showing as black, and their markings only taking on dark, near-black hues. Their base scales do have a subtle, iridescent sparkle that resembles stars, allowing darker or lighter markings to still show on their scales.
The following traits will display their normal colors:
- Appaloosa
- Tobiano
- Orca
- Vampire
- Zebra
- Hailstorm
- Nebula
- Aurora
- Starry
- Dust
- Grunge
- Veil
- Pollen
Additionally, Flaunt and Somatic may create patches of any coloration coloration where they cover a Night or Day dragon, so long as all markings are distinguishable and follow regular brightness rules (IE: sooty is still black, inside of rosettes is still lighter than outside, etc.).
DEFAULT DISPLAY AND MODIFIER TRAIT RARITY
They inherit markings of affiliated elements as if they were that element. This means that the main trait page has the affiliated markings as they would be passed, with unaffiliated elements occurring with a single tier higher rarity.
